Hear from the Principal 26.01.24

Despite the blustery and wet weather, it has been another successful week of learning for our students, and I am pleased to share details of recent field trips, external talks and fundraising successes below.

Students learn a Lat-in trip to Carleon and Bath

For the first time, this academic year, our International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) students have the option to study Latin as a curriculum subject instead of as an enrichment activity and as an IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP) subject.  Yesterday (25 January), a cohort of Year 8 – 11 students travelled to the ancient Roman settlement of Carleon in South Wales to learn more about Britain under Roman occupation and enhance their Latin learning experience. The students visited the Roman amphitheatre and bathhouse in Carleon, before taking part in an interactive workshop at the National Roman Legion Museum. They then travelled to Bath, where they stayed overnight, and have today (26 January) been enjoying exploring the historic Roman Baths in the city. I look forward to hearing about their experiences next week.

A cause beyond their individual needs

An IB education instils a willingness to support others and towards the end of the Autumn Term, I shared details of a project that our Performance School students were involved in to raise funds and awareness for local youth support hub, Centre 33. A number of our students starred in a video to help launch its winter fundraising campaign and I am delighted to share that the project has surpassed its fundraising target and has raised an incredible £11,897! Thank you to all of the students involved. They have made a huge difference to an important cause.

Inspiring Sports Scholars to achieve their goals

As well as professional coaching delivered by Norwich City FC and robust academic learning, our Sixth Form Football Scholars benefit from regular interactions with professionals from across the sporting landscape. From sports therapists and nutritionists to video analysists and more, we provide opportunities for them to learn about the vast range of career pathways available to them and experience what life is like as an elite level athlete.

Previous Football Scholars have established successful sports careers overseas in the USA and attained places at leading universities across the world. Recently, Norwich City FC’s Head of Partnerships, Jonathan Casbon, delivered an engaging talk about the array of careers available within football. Thank you to Jonathan for sharing his knowledge – I know our students learnt a lot from the session.

Instilling a love of Mathematics

Mathematics has been an important topic of conversation in the news recently, and one of the many benefits of completing the DP is that every student studies Mathematics until the age of 18. Our Sixth Form Mathematics students have been recently enjoying a series of lectures from a range of Mathematicians, delivered by Cambridge Maths School. The latest in the series was delivered by the Director of Scholarships and International Programmes at University of Cambridge, Dr. Matthias Dorrzapf. The talk took place at St John’s College in Cambridge and all those in attendance thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I know they are already looking forward to the next in the series.
