Hear from the Principal 19.01.24

The cold weather hasn’t dampened our spirits across the College, which has been a hive of activity, and I am pleased to share details with you below.

International Day of Education

Next week (24 January) marks the United Nations International Day of Education. This year’s theme is ‘Learning for Lasting Peace’, which has been a goal of the International Baccalaureate (IB) since its creation in 1968.

One of the tools the IB equips students with to build a more peaceful world is by encouraging international mindedness. This is embedded within our College ethos and evidenced by our recent achievement of the intermediate level of the British Council’s International School’s Award. I am tremendously proud of our staff and students’ efforts to strengthen our global College community. In the past 12 months alone, our students have supported international charitable projects in Ethiopia, India, Botswana and more; most recently they facilitated a trip for Peruvian students in Arequipa – many of whom have no access to running water – to the seaside for the first time. Education holds the keys to a better, more inclusive and peaceful tomorrow.

Broadway comes to Impington

Our Sixth Form Performance School students have been hard at work over the past few months, preparing for their first major production of the year, a reimagining of the Broadway classic, Guys and Dolls. You may have already seen some sneak previews on the College’s Instagram page and I can tell you that the performance is shaping up to be spectacular. Shows are taking place on 6, 7 and 8 February and are open to the public. Buy your ticket now.

Namaste, India!

Last week, a cohort of students jetted off to Jodhpur and Delhi, India, to enhance their learning experience overseas. As an IB World School, we provide opportunities for our students to experience new cultures firsthand because it is an important part of their learning journey.

During their visit, they took part in a broad range of activities, including a visit to the historic landmarks of the Red Fort and the Akshardham Temple in Old Delhi, a treasure hunt in Jodhpur, and teaching students with disabilities at our partner school, Sucheta Kriplani Shiksha Niketan. Keep your eyes on the College Instagram page to see highlights from the trip.

Let’s go, LEGO® League!

We are proud to offer our students access to more than 40 co-curricular activities during the College day through our iCAS programme. In addition to this, our students enjoy regular competitions and workshops. This week (16 January), a number of students with a particular interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) took part in this year’s FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, delivered by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Our students did the College proud. As well as performing to a high standard, they displayed exemplary maturity and respect for their competitors. Although they narrowly missed out on this year’s title, I am proud of them for their efforts and would like to congratulate them all.

A try-umph of a trip

Thanks to our partnership with Premiership rugby team, Northampton Saints, last week, a cohort of students experienced the excitement of live rugby at a game between Northampton Saints and Bayonne. They even got to spend time on the pitch with a first XV player at half time! This is just one of the benefits of our ongoing partnership with the rugby club, which provides our students with regular coaching sessions and guidance from professional coaches. Our Director of Rugby, Max Dominy, has received numerous emails from you and your children confirming how enjoyable the experience was and I hope that some of the students will continue to refine their rugby skills at our Sixth Form, Impington International College, through our Rugby Scholarship.
