Hear from the Principal 16.06.23

It has been a week of celebration and excitement at the College and I am thrilled to share our good news with you!

Impington – the home of the free IB!

Following a rigorous two-year candidacy and assessment process, we have achieved authorisation from the International Baccalaureate (IB) to deliver its Middle Years Programme (MYP) to our Year 7 – 9 students. This means we are now the first UK state secondary school (for 11 – 18 year olds) to provide our students with the opportunity to study the MYP, Diploma Programme (DP) and Career-related Programme (CP), free of charge.

The authorisation is the culmination of many years of hard work and dedication to delivering a world class education, and I would like to express my sincere gratitude to every member of staff, student and parent who has supported the College on our journey. Thank you all for helping to make Impington the UK home of the free IB!

Histon and Impington EcoFest

Many of our students are passionate about protecting the environment and it was wonderful to see a number of our Design and Technology showcasing their passions at the Histon and Impington EcoFest. The students had their own stall at the event, which displayed some projects they have been working on, as well as highlighting how the skills and knowledge gained during their Year 7 – 9 MYP studies had supported the development of their Year 11 GCSE coursework.

Keep an eye on our College Instagram account for images from the festival.

Gropius Lecture

On Wednesday, I was pleased to welcome Mark Sutton from Arm to the College to deliver the latest in our series of ‘Gropius Lectures.’ Mark is the Senior Director of Operations and Project Manager at one of the region’s biggest technology companies. During his talk, he outlined his roles and responsibilities and shared valuable career insights from his 30 years of working in engineering and technology to inspire and inform our students.

Thank you to everyone who attended – I do hope you found the talk insightful. If you are interested in helping to inspire the next generation of experts in your industry by delivering a talk to our students, please email .

Congratulations to our Science superstars

Throughout the academic year, students from all year groups have achieved success in multiple Maths and Science competitions. Building on this success, 60 of our Year 9 and 10 students recently took part in the UK Biology Challenge. I am delighted that seven of our students received gold awards, placing them in the top 5% of Biology students in the country, while a further 22 students achieved silver and bronze awards. Congratulations to all of the students who took part!

¡Hola Colombia!

Earlier this week, I welcomed 54 Headteachers from public schools in Antioquia, Columbia to the College to showcase our innovative and creative approach to teaching. The visit was part of a wider plan to develop the Columbian educational framework and enabled us to showcase how innovation, creativity, sustainability and inclusion are all nurtured throughout our College community.

Thank you to Ms Mawditt and Ms Blake for leading the visit – we look forward to continuing to support the Columbian Headteachers throughout their process of transforming their curriculum.

Supporting the transition from Year 6 to Year 7

Providing parents with regular opportunities to engage with our staff is one of the key ways in which we support students’ transition from Year 6 to Year 7 and it has been a pleasure to welcome parents of students joining us in September to our Parent Coffee Mornings. Taking place on selected Thursdays, the mornings provide parents with the opportunities to learn more about the College and to speak informally with members of our Senior Leadership Team.

If you’d like to attend one of our Year 6 Transition Parent Coffee Mornings, secure your free place now.
