Hear from the Principal 15.12.23

What an absolutely fantastic term it has been for the College. From receiving authorisation to deliver the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), to being crowned East Anglia’s Comprehensive School of the Year by The Times’ Parent Power Guide  for the third time, it has been a historical and celebratory period for the College.

As we head into the festive break, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to every member of our learning community for their hard work and support throughout the beginning of the 2023/24 academic year. I hope that you all enjoy the break with your loved ones.

A merry adventure to the pantomime

Oh no they didn’t…oh yes they did! A trip to the pantomime is a festive tradition for many and on 12 December, 170 of our Year 8 students travelled to Ely to watch Robin Hood. As well as being an enjoyable experience for all of those who attended, trips to watch live stage productions help to instil a greater love of Performing Arts within our students, which is evidenced by our ever growing Sixth Form Performance School.

Shooting for the stars

I would like to say a huge congratulations to Sixth Form student, Isy S., who has secured her place in the National British Schools Rifle Championships, which will be held in February. Isy a skilled markswoman and her practice contributes to her Creativity Activity and Service requirements. Best of luck in February, Isy – the College will be cheering for you!

Building a love of STEM, one brick at a time

I am proud that we are able to offer such a diverse and balanced curriculum to our students, which includes access to co-curricular events such as this year’s FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge, delivered by The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). A team of our students will apply their STEM and critical thinking skills to build and programme a LEGO® robot and take part in an exciting, mission-based robotics game in which teams compete, score points, and a champion is crowned. Last week, our students took part in in the launch event, which gave them the opportunity to strengthen their creativity, coding and teamwork skills. Keep an eye on the College Instagram page for some photos from the launch event.

Education for a more peaceful world

The MYP provides so much more than just academic learning and helps our students to become well rounded, principled individuals, who are equipped to create a more peaceful world. One of the ways we realise this is through interactive learning experiences. On Tuesday, our Year 9 MYP students travelled to London to visit the Imperial War Museum, where they viewed the harrowing and impactful Holocaust galleries. Our students were respectful of the sensitive nature of the experience and have returned to the College with a greater level of understanding of the dire circumstances that many faced during World War II.

Thank you for joining us

Finally, on Wednesday, I was delighted to welcome parents of our Year 11 students to the College for their Progress Evening. It is always an enjoyable experience for me to be able to celebrate your child’s achievements together. It was particularly pleasing to speak to many of you about our Sixth Form, Impington International College; as a reminder, if your child is interested in joining Impington International College in September 2024, the deadline for MyChoice16 applicants is 15 January 2024.

If they have any questions or want more information about studying the IB Diploma Programme (DP) or Career-related Programme (CP), they are invited to join some of the Sixth Form team and current Year 13 students at a special coffee morning on Monday.
