 BALLROOM DANCING FOR BEGINNERS

Wednesday 25 September for 8 weeks

8.00pm – 9.00pm

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to refresh their basic ballroom dancing skills.  If you enjoy dancing to music, want to get fitter and would like to feel more comfortable and confident moving around a dance floor, then this course is for you.

 

Learn ballroom and Latin American dances including Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive.

 

Dance partner required.

 

Course Aims:

  • Continue to introduce basic ballroom and Latin American dance steps
  • Learn about the origins of each dance and the music, counting in beats according to the time signature of the dance.
  • Improve fitness
  • Gain confidence

Extra Costs:

What you need to bring to the first session:

Comfortable clothes

Shoes with a back in to support the heel (trainers are too grippy)

Bottle of water

 BALLROOM DANCING (NON-BEGINNERS)

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for learners who have developed the necessary steps and knowledge to progress to an advanced level.

 

Ballroom and Latin American dances - Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive.

 

Dance partner required.

Course Aims:

  • Gain further confidence in Ballroom and Latin American dancing
  • Improve styling in each dance and make progress at an advanced level
  • Continue to learn about the origins of each dance and the music, counting in beats according to the time signature of the dance
  • Improve fitness

guitar for beginners 

Wednesday 25 September for 10 weeks

Brief Description:

This course is aimed at absolute beginners and will introduce learners to the basics of guitar playing.  You will look at the mechanics of popular music through the study of the diatonic scale system and its relevant chords.

 

Learners would benefit from practicing / playing up to 4hrs per week – but not necessarily in one session or block.

Course Aims:

·         Develop an understanding of the structure(s) of western music - the diatonic system

·         Demonstrate the basic use of a plectrum to accompany a song

·         Demonstrate a simple patterned finger pick to accompany a song

·         Be able to play a simple solo guitar piece

·         Be able to play along with a simple song in a group format

guitar for improvers 

Wednesday 25 September for 10 weeks

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for anyone who has been learning acoustic guitar for at least one year.  Learners will be asked to speak to the Tutor in advance if they are unsure of their level.

 

Learners should have an understanding of the workings of the diatonic system and possess sufficient technique to demonstrate both a patterned finger pick and effective, basic use of a plectrum on a song or tune

 

Learners would benefit from practicing / playing up to 4hrs per week – but not necessarily in one session or block.

Course Aims:

·         Expand knowledge of the diatonic scale / chord system

·         Demonstrate the use of altered chords within the context of group playing, as well as playing relevant scales ‘freestyle’ over popular pieces of music.

·         Work towards playing a more challenging and complex solo piece

·         Work towards recognising commonly used chord sequences and play along with others on a more 'advanced' chord progression.

TANGO SALON- MILONGA

Thursday 26 September for 10 weeks

7.00pm – 8.30pm

Brief Description:

This course is about Tango, which is a cultural expression from Buenos Aires, famous worldwide as a passionate couple’s dance. Tango Salon is different from ballroom because it allows freer movement and explores improvisation at the milonga (social dancing).

 

If you enjoy dancing to music, want to get fitter and would like to feel more comfortable and confident moving around a dance floor, then this course is for you.

 

You will acquire a concrete guide on how to freely interpret music, approach any dance figure and get the basic idea of tango dancing and culture.

 

No dance partner is required. You will be encouraged to dance with different partners during the session which is the true nature of a Milonga.

 

Course Aims:

·         Introduce Tango Salon - Milonga

·         Understanding creativity and improvisation as central principles of dancing

·         Embracing Tango as a whole cultural expression
