DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - AN INTRODUCTION

Monday 28 January for 6 weeks

Brief Description:

Do you want to know more about digital photography and be able to take your camera off its auto setting?  This course is suitable for learners with no or very little experience with photography / digital photography, who would like to become more confident when using their camera.  You will become familiar with the settings of your digital camera and learn how to create and edit good quality photographs. 

You will have the opportunity to learn about:

  • Memory cards & file management
  • Menu systems, optical and digital zoom
  • Scene modes, composition & the rule of thirds
  • Priority modes, auto & program modes
  • Depth of field, shooting static & moving objects
  • Formatting & printing images
  • Landscape photography
  • Street photography and cityscapes

Course Aims:

  • Understand the basics of digital photography
  • Become familiar with the settings and menus of a digital camera
  • Produce images of a reasonable standard and make minor edits to those images
  • Ready images for producing good quality prints

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - PEOPLE

Thursday 28 February for 5 weeks

7.00pm – 9.00pm

Brief Description:

Do you want to know more about digital photography and be able to take your camera off its auto setting?  This course is suitable for learners with no or very little experience with photography / digital photography, who would like to become more confident when using their camera.  You will become familiar with the settings of your digital camera and learn how to produce good quality images. Weekly assignments will be set around the theme of people (portrait, candid and street photography).

Content: file management, the menu systems, dials & buttons, exposure, depth of field, composition & rule of thirds, scene & priority modes.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - WINTER

Thursday 17 January for 5 weeks

7.00pm – 9.00pm

Brief Description:

Do you want to know more about digital photography and be able to take your camera off its auto setting?  This course is suitable for learners with no or very little experience with photography / digital photography, who would like to become more confident when using their camera.  You will become familiar with the settings of your digital camera and learn how to produce good quality images. Weekly assignments will be set around the theme of winter (frost, snow and ice and how it affects the landscape).

Content: file management, the menu systems, dials & buttons, exposure, depth of field, composition & rule of thirds, scene & priority modes.

TELLING YOUR STORIES USING VIDEO

Wednesday 30 January for 6 weeks

7.00pm – 9.00pm

£60

Brief Description:

Learn to make YouTube and social media videos, documentaries or just improve your family videos for sharing with friends and relatives. In this course, you will learn the skills of video storytelling from a TV professional, including camera, sound and editing, plus interviewing, presenting and the tools to construct a compelling story.

Course Aims:

  • Understand what equipment is best for your needs and how to use it
  • Learn what makes good camerawork, sound recording and editing
  • Try out the director’s toolkit of storytelling techniques
  • Learn to get good material from other people on camera
  • Practise analysing TV and YouTube shows for inspiration
  • Create your own short project to develop your skills

Smartphone, DSLR or video camera

Notebook and a pen

For later sessions, a laptop or tablet with editing software will be helpful but not essential – software options will be discussed in early sessions
