Impington Village College

John Brackenbury Awards

What are the John Brackenbury Awards?

John Brackenbury was an enthusiastic supporter of the village college model, acting as Warden of Impington Village College from 1957 to 1977.  One of his lasting actions was to create a fund for the benefit of students which would provide support for interests that the College could not normally fund.  Today the John Brackenbury Awards continue to give funds to IVC students wishing to pursue extra-curricular activities.  Funds are available to:

  • help develop a hobby or interest
  • gain a qualification that is not available in school
  • take part in an activity or course
  • support an enterprise or project for local benefit
  • assist with travel costs for cultural activities

Who can apply?

You must be a student of Impington Village College studying in Year 7 to Year 14.  Applications can be made by individuals or groups of students.

How much can you apply for?

Awards are usually made between £50 and £200.  The most successful applications are those that demonstrate that you have thought about where else you might seek funds to make your project possible.

What is the application process?

If you have read these guidance notes and think you have a good idea for funding you can complete the application form below.  Please answer all the questions on the application form as accurately and honestly as possible.  If you don’t know the answer to a question just say so.

Please email your completed application form to

Please note that paper copies of applications cannot be accepted.

Once your application form has been received it will be considered by the Awards Panel along with all the other applications.  The Panel will select a small number of the most promising applications to take forward to the next stage.  These applicants will be invited to give a formal presentation to the Awards Panel before a decision can be made about the amount of funding which will be awarded.  You will hear whether you have been successful by the end of June.  Please be aware that the demand for funding is high and a limited number of awards are given each year, which means that it is not possible to fund all of the applications received.

Need some help?

Please talk about your idea to your form tutor, teacher or parents before making an application.  They may be able to give you some advice or support to make your application stronger.
