International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme
What is the IBDP?
Welcomed by leading universities and employers worldwide, the IBDP develops academic independence, giving a breadth of skills and knowledge fit for the 21st century. The Diploma is more than a collection of subjects or the learning of facts; it prepares students exceptionally well for further study or employment.
What will I study as part of the IBDP?
All students study ONE subject from the following groups as part of the Diploma:
1. Native Language (English, Spanish, Italian, German, Polish)
2. Language Acquisition (English, French, German, Spanish, Japanese)
3. Individuals and Societies (History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Philosophy, Environmental Studies)
4. Sciences (Biology, chemistry, physics, sports science, Nature of Science, Environmental Studies)
6. The Arts (or a second Humanities, Language or Science subject) Dance, Film, Music, Theatre arts, visual arts
Students choose three subjects at Higher level and three at Standard level. A maximum of seven points are awarded for each subject.

What is the IBDP Core?
The IB Core is designed to bring together the different elements of the diploma programme, and provides students with an opportunity to develop skills such as independence and enquiry, that are praised by universities. Three additional points are awarded to students for studying Theory of Knowledge, completing the Extended Essay, and participating in Creativity, Activity and Service.
Why should I choose the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme over A Levels?
The IBDP offers more choice, flexibility and breadth/depth of study than A Levels. Each subject at Higher Level is the equivalent of an A Level, but with IB you have the chance to continue a range of subjects you might enjoy. With the IB Core, you have opportunities as part of the curriculum that provide great skills to help you stand out from a crowd of applicants.
Research has also shown that students who complete the IBDP over A Levels ...
... are more likely to go to a top-20 ranked university
... are more likely to go on to postgraduate study
... are more likely to obtain a First Class degree
... will earn more as a graduate
The Higher Education Statistics Agency 2016 Report
The IBDP is one of the world’s most highly regarded and academically rigorous educational programmes. With the recent changes to A-levels and in light of comments such as those of Sir Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the Royal Society, stating Britain is at risk of falling behind other nations by holding onto the limited A level programme of study, there has never been a better time to consider the IBDP. The IBDP offers a stable, credible and internationally recognised path to academic success in an increasingly competitive and changeable environment.
IBDP entry requirements
We require at least seven GCSEs with an average of Grade 5, including English Language and Maths. For subjects you wish to take at higher level you will need at least a grade 6.
