Hear from the Principal 29.09.21

The past two weeks have flown by and I am pleased to be able to share more news, highlights and positive stories from the College with you.

iCAS Xtra

Our students benefit from a wide array of extra-curricular activities, designed to foster a personal sense of accomplishment and inspire a love of learning for pleasure outside of the classroom. Last week, students chose their preferred iCAS Xtra activity from over 40 different options, including the opportunity to learn new languages, develop their sporting skills and play an active role in their wider community. Whether they are learning Mandarin, enjoying yoga or volunteering, I am looking forward to seeing students embrace these new opportunities.

Inspirational teachers

I am incredibly proud of all the teaching staff at the College and this week, our own Mr Lewis was recognised as an inspirational teacher by Smiley News in their Quality Education feature. In the piece, he is acknowledged for his efforts during the recent national lockdown to ensure that the most vulnerable members of his village had access to books to combat mental health challenges and encourage children to continue to read, and learn, during a challenging period of home schooling. Learn more about his efforts to support children’s holistic learning and development here.

Environmental learning

This autumn, our students will be participating in an environmental project to plant a variety of healthy young trees in the woodland area at the front of the College grounds to replace four trees that must be removed to protect our Grade 1 listed building from subsidence caused by their roots. The planting activity will be linked to classroom learning about climate change to improve students’ understanding of the important role that trees play in the environment and in the health and wellbeing of human beings.

Middle Years Programme (MYP) update

It is wonderful to see so many students in Years 7, 8 and 9 beginning to make connections between their learning in different subjects and develop their critical thinking skills as they embark on their International Baccalaureate (IB) learning journey, since we began teaching the MYP curriculum this term. For detailed information about the curriculum, assessment and grading, download the MYP parent handbook here.

Year 6 Open Evening

It was a pleasure to meet so many prospective students and their families at our Year 6 Open Evening on 28 September. Open Evenings are a fantastic way for prospective students and their families to learn more about the MYP, experience different subject activities and explore our striking Bauhaus building, as well as meet with the teaching team and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

For those who were unable to attend the recent Open Evening, we will also be offering a limited number of ticketed tours, led by senior staff, during the week commencing 4 October and you can reserve your place today.

New building for a new academic year

Alongside our 30th anniversary of offering the IB, we are thrilled to celebrate another milestone this year with the opening of our brand new Sixth Form building, in time to welcome our largest cohort of Year 12 students for the last two years, who have joined us on a local, national and international scale. With three large classrooms and a fully equipped seminar room to support students’ learning and independent study, I am looking forward to seeing them thrive in their new education environment. Read more about the new building.

Sixth Form Open Evening

For our Year 11 parents, we know you are now considering post-16 options for your child(ren) and I would like to take this opportunity to remind you about our Sixth Form Open Evening, which is taking place on 21 October. Alongside 1:1 meetings and guided tours, the Open Evening is an opportunity to meet our subject specialists, hear from current students about their educational experience and explore the facilities onsite, including our new Sixth Form building. It is heartening to see that so many of our current students and their families have already registered to attend as they consider continuing their learning journey with us here at Impington. Booking is required to attend the Open Evening and you can reserve your place here.
