Cycle and Pedestrian Travel Consultations

The College has been working with the local community to engage support for safer cycle and pedestrian travel, as part of an active travel working group, involving local residents, Camcycle, county and parish councillors. As one aspect of this, we are looking at making improvements such as new cycle paths, routes, crossings and so on.

There are a number of consultations out at the moment, which we are contributing to, in order to galvanise support for the changes needed in the area. If your child cycles or walks to College, it would be fantastic if you would contribute to the consultations in order to promote the need for improvements.

Cycling Plus: Investing in Cambridge’s Active Travel Network

The Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) is working to improve walking and cycling in the region.  This consultation identifies 13 potential corridors to join up the cycling network in Greater Cambridge. With a budget to tackle just two or three of these, it is important to show your support for the routes that will directly benefit the college. These are ‘Impington – Milton’, which includes New Road outside the college and Butt Lane out to Milton, and ‘Histon – Histon Road’, which includes the cycle crossings at the A14 and the length of B1049 through Histon and Impington. Details are on page 21 and 22 of the GCP Active Travel Study. This consultation closes at midday on 16th August.

Some suggestions for ways you could promote the safety of our students include to:

* Support the proposed shared use path along New Road as it will benefit pupils from Orchard Park.

* Support traffic calming and narrowing of New Road to ensure the path is wide enough for pedestrians and cycles to share.

* Support priority changes at the side roads, to allow pupils to cross safely.

* Support the reconfigured Impington Lane junction as it will help pupils crossing near the college.

* Support traffic reduction on Milton Road/Butt Lane as it will benefit pupils cycling from Milton.

* Request a significantly upgraded cycle lane alongside Milton Road/ Butt Lane.

* Support the proposed cycle lanes along Water Lane and Bridge Street as this will benefit pupils resident within Histon and Impington, or arriving from Cottenham, Girton etc.

Cambridgeshire Active Travel Schemes

Cambridgeshire County Council are consulting on a number of quick win schemes to improve active travel in the county. One of these is for Station Road in Histon. The proposal is for a filter outside the Baptist Church, this would exclude through motor traffic – while retaining access to all properties – to create a low traffic street that is more attractive as a route for walking and cycling. A recent survey has shown our pupils use this route, so please add your support for this improvement to the consultation. It is open for comments until midnight on 24th August.

Some suggestions for ways you could promote the safety of our students include to:

* Support the proposed modal filter on Station Road as it will provide a low traffic route for pupils walking and cycling through the local village.

* Request that options are explored to retain the Citi 8 bus stops outside the Baptist church.

We will be continuing to work with our partners in the community, and local residents, to promote safer active travel for our students.
