Dear Parent/Carer

Cambridge Youth Poetry Slam

In May Impington Village College and Cottenham Village College have been invited to help launch the Cambridge Youth Poetry Slam.  This will be the very first poetry competition specifically for young people in Cambridgeshire.  It is a very exciting opportunity for our students to work with acclaimed poets – and have the chance to perform on stage alongside other young people from across Cambridgeshire.

The project is being launched by Page to Performance - a collective of creative practitioners who have a proven track record of delivering enlivened and multi-layered work with young people.  For details visit www.pagetoperformance.org

At Impington Village College all Year 8 students are invited to take part in a workshop during school time, on either May 15, or May 17, depending on side of the year.  The workshop will be led by former UK Slam Poet Champion, Hollie McNish – who has experience performing around the world and has recently been commissioned by the BBC, and supported by members of the English Faculty.

Following the workshop, students will be invited to enter the Cambridge Youth Poetry Slam competition through a new dedicated website at www.strawberry-slam.org.uk (please note the website will not be live until April).  Any young person age 12 – 19 can enter the competition.  Young people can also share their poems on the website without entering the competition.  From the competition entries 12 young poets will be short-listed to come and perform on stage at the Strawberry Slam grand final on Saturday 2 June.  The slam is being hosted in a dedicated youth area with CRB checked stewards and Page to Performance facilitators (please note responsibility for young people at the grand final remains with parents).

This project offers a really exciting opportunity for our students.  Please note the competition part is OPTIONAL!  However we would like to involve all Year 8 students in the workshop as we believe it will be a valuable experience for everyone.

Yours sincerely
