19 September 2013

Dear Parent/Carer

I am writing to inform you that from Monday 23 September those students following the Dual Award for Science, groups 11X3, 11X4, 11Y2 and 11Y3, will be doing a piece of controlled assessment during Science lessons. This will not require them to be out of other subjects. Students will need to research the following 2 statements;

The hypothesis is “The amount of carbonate in an ore sample can be measured by adding hydrochloric acid to the sample until it stops fizzing.”

The context is “This information could be used to perform quick tests in the real world to see where a quarry could be situated to extract ores rich in carbonate”

Time will be given over in Science lessons to research and explain these but it would aid us if you could talk through the 2 statements and make sure your son/daughter understands what is being asked.

It is important that if a student is going to miss one of the lessons that they talk to their Science teacher or myself, as the controlled assessments make up 25% of their overall GCSE grade.
