BALLROOM DANCING FOR BEGINNERS

Wednesday 27 September for 10 weeks

8.00pm – 9.00pm

£50 / £40 concession

Taster – Wednesday 13 September – 8.00pm-9.00pm

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for absolute beginners and those who wish to refresh their basic ballroom dancing skills.  If you enjoy dancing to music, want to get fitter and would like to feel more comfortable and confident moving around a dance floor, then this course is for you.

You will be introduced to many ballroom and Latin American dances including Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive.

Course Aims:

  • Introduce basic ballroom and Latin American dance steps
  • Learn about the origins of each dance and the music, counting in beats according to the time signature of the dance.
  • Improve fitness
  • Gain confidence

Extra Costs:

What you need to bring to the first session:

Comfortable clothes

Shoes with a back in to support the heel (trainers are too grippy)

Bottle of water

 BALLROOM DANCING FOR IMPROVERS

Wednesday 27 September for 10 weeks

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for learners who have developed the necessary steps and knowledge to progress to an improver level

If you enjoy dancing to music, want to get fitter and would like to feel more comfortable and confident moving around a dance floor, then this course is for you.

Ballroom and Latin American dances - Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango, Cha Cha, Samba, Rumba, Jive.

Course Aims:

  • Gain further confidence in Ballroom and Latin American dancing
  • Build upon existing knowledge of dance routines and introduce new steps
  • Learn about the origins of each dance and the music, counting in beats according to the time signature of the dance.
  • Improve fitness

 GUITAR FOR BEGINNERS

Wednesday 27 September for 14 weeks

6.45pm – 7.45pm

Brief Description:

This course is aimed at absolute beginners and will introduce learners to the basics of guitar playing.  You will look at the mechanics of popular music through the study of the diatonic scale system and its relevant chords.

Learners would benefit from practicing / playing up to 4hrs per week – but not necessarily in one session or block.

Course Aims:

  • Develop an understanding of the structure(s) of western music - the diatonic system
  • Demonstrate the basic use of a plectrum to accompany a song
  • Demonstrate a simple patterned finger pick to accompany a song
  • Be able to play a simple solo guitar piece
  • Be able to play along with a simple song in a group format

GUITAR FOR IMPROVERS

Wednesday 27 September for 14 weeks

Brief Description:

This course is suitable for anyone who has been learning acoustic guitar for at least one year.  Learners will be asked to speak to the Tutor in advance if they are unsure of their level.

Learners should have an understanding of the workings of the diatonic system and possess sufficient technique to demonstrate both a patterned finger pick and effective, basic use of a plectrum on a song or tune.

Learners would benefit from practicing / playing up to 4hrs per week – but not necessarily in one session or block.

Course Aims:

  • Expand knowledge of the diatonic scale / chord system
  • Demonstrate the use of altered chords within the context of group playing, as well as playing relevant scales ‘freestyle’ over popular pieces of music
  • Work towards playing a more chalenging and complex solo piece
  • Work towards recognising commonly used chord sequences and play along with others on a more 'advanced' chord progression

 SALSA

Thursday 28 September for 11 weeks

Brief Description:

Over the last decade, Salsa has become one of the most popular dances in the UK and across Western Europe.  Although it developed in Latin America, it is a type of music and dance that also has its roots in Europe.  It is a community dance accessible to all ages and for many years it has provided an ideal opportunity to promote the spirit of friendship and a sense of community among people.

This course will teach learners Cuban style Salsa dances such as the Cha Cha Cha, Charanga, La Rueda, Bolero and Merengue and many more in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.  So come along and have fun!

Course Aims:

  • Introduce the moves which form the basis for all types of Salsa
  • Learn to listen to the music, understand the logic of Salsa rhythms and co-ordinate movements in tune with all the instruments used in Salsa music
  • Improve fitness
  • Gain confidence

Shoes that do not stick to the floor.  Leather sole are recommended (trainers are too grippy).

UKULELE FOR ALL

Monday 9 October for 8 weeks

Brief Description:

In a relaxed, fun and encouraging environment, you’ll learn the basic techniques of ukulele playing as well as some well-known songs to practise with.

This course is suitable for absolute beginners and those wishing to further develop their skills.  Please contact the Office if you would like to be put in contact with the Tutor.

Develop an understanding of the western diatonic system of music in order to play with others and to develop both.

Learners would benefit from practicing / playing up to 2hrs per week – but not necessarily in one session or block.

Course Aims:

  • Develop an understanding of the structure(s) of western music - the diatonic system and it’s relevant chords
  • Introduce plucking and picking techniques to enhance both group and solo playing
  • Be able to play a selection of songs / tunes on the ukulele

What you need to bring to the first session:

You will need to bring your own ukulele.  It must be in good playing order.
