All students at IVC must do Science as part of their curriculum. Lessons are taught as discrete subjects, Biology, Chemistry and Physics with the exception of some BTEC Science classes.

There are three main routes through KS4 Science;

  • Separate Science which results in the award of 3 GCSEs. This route is suitable for those students with a keen interest in Science. 3 GCSEs are taught in the curriculum time for 2 GCSEs (except for the current Year 11 who have had to use one of their option blocks). Due to this increased pace and the greater difficulty of content students must have a 5a at the end of Year 8, preferably a 6c.
  • Science and Additional Science which result in the award of 2 GCSEs. This is the standard route for students to follow.
  • BTEC Science. This course is designed for those students where the options above would not be suitable.

Separate Science

3 GCSEs will be awarded, 1 of each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The year groups referred to below give details of the courses that the current years are following.

Year 9 and 10

Year 11

Year 9 start the year with a bridging unit between KS3 and 4. We then concentrate on experimental and analysis skills and this leads into the start of the IGCSE course. At the end of Year 9 a decision will is made about the best course of study for a given group. The options are to continue with the IGCSE courses or swap to the AQA Separate Science courses. These are then followed in Years 10 and 11. Both routes require terminal examination so no examined modules are taken until the end of Year 11.

Year 11 are following the AQA Separate Science courses.

The exam board that we are following is AQA and each GCSE requires

  • 3 examinations (1 January 2012, 1 January 2013 and 1 June 2013)
  • 1 controlled assessment module.

Science and Additional Science

2 GCSEs will be awarded, Science and Additional Science. The year groups referred to below give details of the courses that the current years are following.

Year 9 and 10

Year 11

Year 9 start the year with a bridging unit between KS3 and 4. We then concentrate on experimental and analysis skills and this leads into the start of the AQA Science A and Additional Science courses.

Students will be awarded the Science GCSE and the Additional Science GCSE at the end of Year 11. The exam board that we are following is AQA and each GCSE requires

  • 3 examinations (1 each of Biology, Chemistry and Physics sat in the Summer Term)
  • 1 controlled assessment module.

Additional Science

Year 11 are following the AQA Additional Science course. If students have not completed the AQA Science course then they will do so during the year.

At the end of Year 10 students were awarded the Science GCSE and at the end of this current academic year will be awarded the Additional Science GCSE.

The exam board that we are following is AQA and the Additional Science GCSE requires

BTEC Science

The current BTEC Science course is all internally assessed but since the Wolf Report regarding vocational qualifications the new BTEC courses (from September 2012) have a 25% external examination component. This course is not suitable for those students who would want to go on to Biology, Chemistry or Physics KS5 courses of study but it does have progression paths to vocational KS5 Science study.

Details on the BTEC courses can be found by clicking the links below;
