History and Ethos

Impington Village College was founded in 1939 and occupies a beautiful site just north of the vibrant city of Cambridge. Our main building has the distinction of being designed by Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus (the arts and design school that was a major influence on modernism in the 20th century), and is Grade 1 Listed.

This year, we are proud to be celebrating 70 years as a school serving the local community of villages that comprise our admission zone (Dry Drayton, Girton, Histon, Impington, Milton and Oakington), as well as districts in the north of Cambridge.  Since 1990, we have also developed a highly successful sixth form offering the International Baccalaureate (our main programme) and A Levels to students from across both the region and globe.  We currently have students from over 30 countries on roll.  This all contributes to making our College a wholly unique and exciting place of learning.

As a village college, we were established on the principles so importantly described in Henry Morris’s 1924 Memorandum of a ‘community centre of the neighbourhood… the place where life is lived’.  These are held as truly today as they were when the College was founded nearly a lifetime ago. Our sports centre is a place of popular choice within the district; our community learning classes are always well-subscribed; our many facilities are used by young and old alike.

To continue our development as a college in the community for the community,in 2008 we started the process of changing to Foundation status.   The decision to make the change was taken earlier this year and we became a Foundation school on 1 September 2009. You can read our principles on this website which embody the determination of the Governors to ensure that the College continues to serve its community effectively for another lifetime.

We endeavour to imbue a strong community ethos in the school and be committed to the wider community in which we live and work.  The College has a long and distinguished history behind, but we are not complacent.  Our ambition is to become an outstanding place of learning that is truly international, inspirational and inclusive.  If you wish to visit us or you feel you have the talents that could be developed and nurtured here, please contact us.
